Computer engineering (or Computer Systems Engineering) encompasses broad areas of both electrical engineering and computer science. Computer engineers are engineers who have training in the areas of software design and hardware-software integration.

THEREFORE:

Computer Science = Software + Applications
Computer Engineering = Hardware + Computer Science

It would seem the better fit would be a computer science related field. A field pertaining more to the programming and hardware stages of developing computers. As an engineer, it is an advantage to enjoy math, but not required, practice, practice and more practice helps with the math. Computer science would seem more hands on with computers as engineering would be more along the lines of developing new designs that pertain to circuitary design etc. As for many fields related to this one, knowledge is gained with experience rather than the classroom.

one more question… i have a decent ap us history teacher and a crappy computer science teacher. i dont feel very confident in passing either ap tests. which books do you reccomend me get in order to pass?

Out of the three sciences, you should definitely take the physics SAT II. Every engineer or Comp Sci major will have to take at least 2 physics courses their freshman year. Many engineering schools (like mine) also require everyone to take a semester of chemistry, so I would say that should be your second choice for SAT IIs. Pretty much all good engineering schools require at least 1 math and 1 science exam. Take one extra in any subject that you feel confidant about, just in case they require three. Good luck with your tests!

The barrons SAT books are very good. I would concentrate on the computer science exam primarily, since having a good foundation in what you would like to major in is more important than getting out of a history class in college.

I am looking now for a larger name company to work with, and to work on more interesting software. Location isn’t really important but if anyone knows any good ones in New York City I’d love to go there for a few months.

I don’t think the company you intern at is that important – WHAT you did is more important than WHERE you did it.

Don’t overlook smaller firms. Sure, everyone thinks they want to work for Microsoft, or Trend Micro, but you’ll spend 90% of your time just learning how to deal with their internal corporate policies – that’s not very useful.

Smaller companies, by their very nature, are much more dynamic and fast moving environments. This can give you a better idea of what the computer industry is like in a shorter term, while still putting you in a position to actually *DO* something that resembles the stuff from your classes.

My first internship was at a small local company, and put me into a field I’d never even heard of before – Quality Assurance – and now, over 15 years later, it’s something I’m still doing. I also got to watch the company go public (start offering stock on the stock exchange) which I now realize was a very rare thing to be able to witness.
